Taylor Swift's recent songs are frustrating.
The instrumentals are so inconsistent.
They can be absolutely masterful and elaborate in songs like Haunted. At the same time you have songs that sound very sloppy, worst of all being Sparks Fly. I mean I love the song but the instrumentals are really sloppy. The fact that I love the song above that shows how awesome it is.
There is also no end to the wash of songs with cheesy electric guitar intros. Then there are the songs where everything sounds so simple and the song is carried through on harmony and perhaps a lone banjo, or a few fiddles. Pianos and mandolins and violins get their say in her music as well.
The drums in her songs range from standard pop, to rock beats and drummers that spam on breaks whenever they have the chance. And sometimes for the same type of song too.
In The Story Of Us theres the wonderful interesting drum beat that kicks in from the second verse onwards and a lot of little flourishes from the guitars but the chorus has a monstrous techno instrument that drives the song forward and blots out everything but the drums while pulsating to the beat. Its discombobulating and just irritating.
The only thing that fortunately never seems to lose its prominence in her songs is her voice that ties it all together. The only source of consistency in her music other than theme.
Even then she's begun to play around with back-up vocals and layering.
A lot of people say her music all sounds the same. They probably haven't heard Speak Now yet.
