This went on for about ten minutes before he picked up a lovely pearly white shell. Symmetrical and with no ugly lines trailing around it's exterior, a hint of jade green coming from the interior. The boy paused, taking in for a moment the beauty of the abandoned home of the expired sea creature; deciding that he could do better, chucked it over his shoulder.
The boy continued to amble down the beach, never stopping for long, almost obsessive in his picking and discarding, until he ran himself into the pier that marked the end of the beach, with only the sea and angry rocks beyond. He stared, incomprehensibly with his search forcibly ended by the limitations of man and did not know what to do.
He glanced around him and saw the endless string of shells strewn all over the sand stretching far back into the distance and realised what he had done. He quickly tore back up the beach, obsessively scouring the discarded debris for that gleaming shell that seemed so inadequate merely minutes before.
